The movie was reportedly a remake of the 2017 South Korean film ‘The Outlaws’. Radhe box office collection is a topic of interest as Salman Khan had apologized for the poorly received movie.

Radhe: Movie plot overview

The drug mafia cartel has been on the uprise and has increase massively in India thanks to youngsters getting increasingly addict to local drugs that even drive them to suicide.

The Mumbai police are quite fed up with the constant cases of drug abuse so they decide to reinstate a suspended officer on duty named Radhe, to clean the stench of drug abuse and finally nip the cases in the bud.

Radhe, being a talented and skilled police offer takes this opportunity to make two rival groups ‘Dagdu Dada’ and ‘Dilwar’ join hands and come together because both rival groups have a common link – their hatred for the drug cartel business and their undying love for Mumbai and it’s youth.

Although talented, Radhe is often at loggerheads with his reporting officer the very vibrant ACP Avinash Abhyankar who decides to steal Radhe’s credits whilst the latter romances ACP’s sister, Dia.

The real essence of the movie takes place when the mafia drug lord, Rana lands in Mumbai and soon after, forces innocent people to sell drugs thus leading to Dilwar’s death. However, the news of Dilwar’s death comes as a shock especially since it was an assassination by Rana’s brother Mansoor who indefinitely works for the former. Caught up in this, Radhe picks up pace and gets down to business wherein he vows to trace Rana and stop his drug cartel once and for all – thus, a cat-and-mouse game ensues towards the climax of the film.

This made the movie the first ever Indian one to have a hybrid release – both in theatres and PPV formats since lots of movie theatres remained closed in Mumbai and Delhi.

A significant ‘turning point’ for Indian cinema’s economy was possible because of Radhe’s film release as trade analysts and exhibitors considered this was during the pandemic and both Khan and Zee Studios mentioned that revenues of the film would be donate to COVID-19 relief funds.

Radhe Box Office Collection

Given that Radhe’s release was during the Eid period, this was supposed to create a fanatical record at the box on sentimental value and everyone knows that Khan being a big player in Bollywood has managed to break box office collections with his stupendous films.

However, this was not the case with Radhe.

Although it was released on Eid, the novel COVID-19 pandemic made situations quite difficult for earning revenue thus it did not enjoy a blockbuster opening.

The box office collections reported a gross earning of INR 18.33 million, which was insanely low given that the production costs and budget went up to a whopping INR 90 crores.

Salman apologized and mentioned that the box office collection would be ‘ZERO’ because it would be released in very few cinemas in India and overseas. So the box office collection will be poor’.

Unfortunately, this was the actual case and it was the lowest ever – for a Salman Khan film.

Critical Response

The movie had received mostly negative reviews which was surprising even for Salman Khan.

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, Radhe holds a poor rating of 9% based on 11 reviews and an average rating of 1.6/10 which is one of the lowest.

IMDb has a similar rating of 1.9/10, the lowest-rated film that Salman Khan ever acted in.

Anna M. Vetticad from FirstPost rated the film 0/5, whereas Stutee Ghosh from The Quint rated the film 0.5/5 and called it a ‘cringefest’.

Saibal Chatterjee from NDTV gave the film a 2/5 rating with that being the highest overall.

Conclusion

Although the film received very high negative reviews from critics and audiences alike who criticized everything about the movie including VFX – the movie still managed to become the most watched OTT film on the day of its release with a watching of 4.2 million views.

This however did not stop from publications like The Indian Express listing the movie as one of the worst Indian films of 2021.
